Weight and a Tale of Friends!
Week of Oct 20th 2020
This project was probably my favorite of the class so far! I used some old ocs again for this project since I have lots of doodling experience with them. Their names are Vee and Mina, two of a trio of friends that just get up to regular teenage shenanigans. Not included in this animation is the third of the trio, Donny, who didn't make the cut into the final animation because I was too rushed to put him in. Sorry Donny :( I designed these characters after me and my closest friends from high school (yikes self insert) after one of them suggested we make a comic about us since it would be a good creative collaboration between all of us. However, it never made it past the "pilot" scripting and my character designs because we were all busy getting up to our teenage shenanigans in REAL LIFE. So now obviously these characters hold a place near and dear to my heart, I had to use them at some point!

Since these characters are replicated after us, I figured I could include them doing mundane teenager things that we would do in real life (duh). So in ~
real life~ I moved in with one of the best friends in the collaboration, Veronica!, so I decided to animate a scene celebrating that!
Mina's Animation
We didn't fully flesh out the characters to a large extent, but from what we originally planned, Mina is an energetic and enthusiastic complement to the other members of the trio. She's eager to please people and cares deeply about her friends, so she's always quick (and a bit too impulsive) to try and do whatever it takes to keep them all together because that's when she's most happy. Too match her eager spirit, she's lifting a box that's juuust a bit too heavy for her. Of course, Mina doesn't care to put the box down and look too see what could possibly weigh that much or ask for help. But in her defense, who packed a bowling ball anyway?
Vee's Animation
Vee is hardworking and seems to always choose a straightforward approach to everything. She always carries herself with pride and holds herself to a very high expectation, but of course that pressure can be taxing at times. She doesn't let her guard down often but she definitely does have a soft spot for the other two in her trio. I animated her in a slow-paced walk cycle to show her unwavering, persistent nature. She's cautious, so it would only make sense she would put her full concentration into only each step she's taking.
I hopefully will do something with these characters eventually. Like I said before, they are very close to me. It seems like a pretty unattainable goal right now, since we're all now so busy in our own lives to work on a petty comic, but it is a goal I want to achieve one day. I love my friends so much and I feel like working on this would be like a permanent homage to the teenage years I loved (or more like am loving) so much. As I'm growing older now, I realize that times will never be as easy as they were then. I can sure set a day aside to hang out all again and relive all the things we used to do, but now my mind would probably not ever be satisfied with just remaking memories that will never compare to the original experience. But, that doesn't mean I should just wallow about chasing the high I felt when we were kids. I still have them with me now, we're just older now and our dynamic has just changed, there's really no harm in growing up as long as you are actually growing.
